just like. the way hickman writes rich forced me to see how he views comic in general. he obviously likes rich enough to make him a main character in this event, but just as obviously he doesn't actually care about rich's character history. he likes the idea of a seasoned, tired "space cop" who can play the straight man to peter's antics. anything other than that would require him to acknowledge or god forbid build on other writers' work, so it gets jettisoned. there's a weird dissonance between his blatant disregard of anything that came before him and the fact that if nothing came before him he wouldn't have a career to begin with. he has his story to tell and he clearly believes he's above incorporating other people's work into his own. he loves comics but i don't think he respects them very much

Lucy Gray's surname is currently interesting me. Baird, meaning "bard, minstrel, or poet". Also the surname of John Logie Baird, a pioneer of television (in a way that parallels how Lucy Gray brought the entertainment element to the Games). Suzanne has her thematically-relevant names on point.
